Wouldn’t it be nice if your dog walked on the lead without pulling, sat for a pat from visitors instead of jumping up, and behaved well around food, other people, and dogs? This course is a great for all young dogs. In this class, we will work on:

  • Engagement (getting your dog’s attention)

  • Loose-lead walking, including walking past other dogs and distractions

  • Recall (coming when called)

  • Polite greetings (no jumping)

  • Leave it

  • Sit, Down

  • Wait / Stay

  • Food manners

Not suitable for dogs highly reactive to other dogs or humans.

Good Manners on the coast

I can offer the 5-week Good Manners course in the Ngunguru / Tutukaka area on demand. You would have to get at least 4-5 teams to join the course and someone would need to be able to host the course in a good-size private garden space. Unfortunately, sharing the reserves in the area with the public is not suitable for the group class due to disruptions and to keep the dogs in the course safe. A covered area would be great for holding the orientation session without dogs.

Reactive Dog

Does your dog bark, pull, or lunge at other dogs while on lead? Are you feeling stressed and frustrated with the embarrassing encounters on walks every time another dog appears?

This 5-week course is specifically designed for dogs who become over-the-top excited, bark, whine, cry, growl, or lunge at other dogs while on lead, but who usually interact well with other dogs off lead.

Date/time: To be scheduled
Location: Indoor training facility at 120 Robert Street, Whangarei
Cost: $210 per dog
Registration: Essential, only three dogs per class

Reactive Dog will give you ‘survival skills’ to manage and prevent your dog’s over-reactive behaviour. You will learn powerful, dog-friendly methods to help your dog relax and focus on you, and you’ll get to practice techniques to change your dog’s emotional response to other dogs.

The overall goal of this class is to have your dog behave politely and calmly around other on-lead dogs, to give you the confidence to handle sticky situations, to help you understand your dog better, and to make your walks together much more enjoyable.

Week 1 of class is a session for humans only (dogs stay at home) to develop your training skills, explain key concepts, and run through safety procedures.

Small group (only three - four dogs) The training area is set up to keep stress levels low for you and your dog during instruction through a highly structured environment with visual barriers.

Because of the sensitive nature of this course, you must complete a comprehensive questionnaire and your dog may need to be evaluated (free) prior to enrolment.

Please note:

This class is not suitable for dogs

  • with aggression issues toward people (fearful, growls, threatens or bites) or for dogs with a history of dog aggression on or off lead (your dog caused fights and/or inflicted injurious bites to other dogs). If this describes your dog, contact me for a private behaviour consultation.

  • Who react very strongly even when the other dog is a long distance away

This is not a socialisation class. Due to varying degrees of reactivity of the dogs, they will not be interacting.
